The first time I heard of the Sohn Investment Conference was in 2008, the year that David Einhorn delivered his famous short-Lehman Brothers pitch. Those were the days when I harbored aspirations of running my own hedge fund. I envisioned myself commanding the stage one day, captivating the attention of the most eminent financial minds.
Over time, my dream evolved, and I stopped indulging in fantasies about the conference.
In 2014, I launched Stray Reflections, driven by a belief in the power of unconventional wisdom and independent thinking. I was leaning toward a life of writing rather than investing. A question haunted me—Was I still capable of providing investment advice?—until I chanced upon the words of Anne Lamott.
When asked what the goal of the writer was, she responded, “I think, to help others have this sense of wonder, of seeing things anew, things that can catch us off guard, that break in on our small, bordered worlds.”
Hearing those words, I understood that I should aspire to achieve precisely that.
I still pore over the notes from the Sohn Investment Conference every year. Last year’s speakers included Sam Altman, Patrick Collison, and Stan Druckenmiller. The thought of being in the audience, however, let alone gracing the stage at Lincoln Center, no longer occurs to me.
So can you imagine my astonishment upon receiving an invitation to participate in this year’s event? I’ll be sharing the stage with Karen Karniol-Tambour (co-CIO of Bridgewater) and Greg Coffey (CIO of Kirkoswald).
You. Yes, you, Jawad.
