I hear the word “discipline” frequently used in contemporary society. Without discipline, you can’t wake up early in the morning, walk a thousand steps to get fit, or succeed in life and at work.
Jocko Willink’s famous adage, “Discipline equals freedom,” perfectly captures this. “Discipline is the driver of daily execution. Discipline defeats the infinite excuses that hold you back.”
A word I wish I heard more often is “devotion.” It stirs up feelings of the sacred, a dedicated commitment, and surrender to a higher ideal. Discipline, on the other hand, conjures up images of oneself throttling a goal into submission.
Disciple requires willpower. You must channel it from within yourself. Devotion has a very different energy. You think of God in all you do and immerse yourself in His remembrance. You experience the flow of love and grace. Ask yourself: Am I exercising discipline or devotion?
By putting the right intention into every action, I can transform it into a devotional act. This includes waking up in the morning (offering thanks for another day of life), eating and exercise (nourishing the body for worship), having every conversation (giving good counsel), and working (supporting one’s family).
Live your life in devotion, Jawad. All of life is worship.
